Prayer, Sanctification, and Missions

The night before Evangeline was born, Allen had the privilege to preach to IPC’s Wednesday night crowd.  He used a section of Luke’s Gospel where Jesus tells Peter that Satan has requested to sift him like wheat.  Instead of rebuking Satan for his request, Jesus does something amazing: he prayed for Peter! (Luke 22:31-32) Here’s the point: if prayer is important for Jesus’ mission, it is essential for our mission.

In Revelation 8, there is an amazing scene that glues together the 7 seals and 7 trumpets.  When Jesus opens a seal, amazing things happen and history advances.  When a trumpet is blown, amazing things happen and history advances.  Then in the middle of the seals and trumpets is a scene where an angel take a censer full of incense into the heavenly Holy of Holies.  The text says the the incense is the “prayer of the saints”.  So, Revelation 8:1-5 teaches us that…

God has so designed the world, that history advances through our prayers.  That’s why God uses white headed ladies who pray more than any king, tyrant, or president to shape our world.  And that’s the truth!
